Terrain and Cabin Descriptions
Here are detailed descriptions of our three mountain lodges, and the terrain which surrounds them: For winter bookings, we guarantee that you will find terrain to suit the abilities and preferences of every member of your group. Lodge Descriptions
Whether you are skiing fresh powder, snowshoeing open meadows, or hiking hut to hut in the famous Wells Gray Park alpine flower meadows, you will find these cabins a cozy home base for all of your adventures
Trophy Chalet & Fight Meadow Chalet
Trophy Chalet is a comfortable and efficiently designed building that will sleep ten people in full comfort and has no problem with twelve. Downstairs is the living area with a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, a drying area with drying racks and a shelf full of books and games. The oven, stove and furnace are all propane. The lights are solar powered. There also is a small clean up area with a shower stall. We heat water up and bring it into the shower stall. There is a foot pump which you use to feed water to the shower head. The alpine is a very dry environment and part of our efforts to minimize our impact in these areas is to be very conscientious with our water use.
Attached to the chalet is a change room with a sink and a fantastic cedar sauna that we use in the winter only. This means that you can go right to the sauna from inside of the building. There is a door to the outside that allows the braver souls to roll in the snow – the traditional way to cool off in the sauna! The sauna is heated with propane – a great no hassle feature. The building are very well insulated and running the sauna in the summer makes the cabins too hot, so the sauna reverts to a food pantry in the summer.
The interior of the cabin is finished in beautiful white pine and has large windows for the wonderful mountain views. Upstairs is the sleeping area which is divided into two person berths with curtain doors. Each berth has mattresses, duvets, pillows, and blankets. You will need to bring a sleeping bag liner or a sheet and a pillowcase to make your bed with. If you are sleeping double, one person carrying a fitted sheet and the other carrying a double sheet works well. None of the buildings have running water as we feel a septic system would prove too intrusive to the environment. Outside is an environmentally friendly composting toilet system which is very clean and comfortable. There are sandals for indoor use and big rubber boots for going out, so save yourself some weight and leave the extra shoes at home. A big propane furnace keeps everything warm.
To get to Trophy in the winter there is a 14 km ride on a Sno-Cat to the trailhead which is a 2-4 hour ski from the drop off point. You can also choose to fly into the building. In the summer we will pick you up at you accommodation and drive you up the small dirt road to the trail head and hike about 2-4 hours.
Discovery Cabin
Newly renovated in 2022, this is a beautiful wood building that has a very cozy feel. Downstairs is the living area with a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area and a drying area with drying racks. The oven, stove, and furnace are all propane. The emergency equipment and the lights are run off of solar panels. Attached to the chalet is a change room with a sink and a fantastic cedar sauna for winter use. This means that you can go right to the sauna from inside of the building. There is also a door to the outside that allows the braver souls to roll in the snow – the traditional way to cool off in the sauna! The sauna is heated with propane – a great no hassle feature. There are mattresses, duvets, pillows, and blankets. We ask that people bring a sleeping bag liner or a sheet and a pillowcase to make their beds with. None of the buildings have running water as we feel a septic system would prove too intrusive to the environment. Outside is an environmentally friendly composting toilet system which is very clean and comfortable. There are sandals for indoor use and big rubber boots for going out, so save yourself some weight and leave the extra shoes at home. A big propane furnace keeps everything warm. We think that you will find enough amenities to stay happy and comfortable in your snug home away from home. The views out the front window are stunning, and the scenery fantastic. The buildings are comfortable, but not luxurious; just like our prices!
Terrain Descriptions
Trophy Mountain Chalet Terrain
| Trophy Mountain Chalet is right at tree line (7000 ft, 2145 m) and is in the steepest terrain of the system. Alpine skiing is out the back door and tree skiing is out the front. This allows for a good choice of ski terrain in all conditions. All aspects N, S, E & W are close to the chalet. The chalet is situated in the middle of intermediate terrain. More aggressive ski terrain is an hour ski away. There are a lot of ridges, gullies, and chutes right around the chalet. Even in the worst conditions, there is always good snow stashes to be found as there are a lot of protected areas and many different aspects. Most of the skiing close to the building is shorter runs (800′ to 1500′) and would be classified as intermediate and above. For the bigger terrain, you have to ski away from the building and you get the bigger runs of 2000′ and more feet. There is expert terrain in all directions for those that want the challenging slopes, but we are also able to find lower intermediate and lots of intermediate skiing. Spring ski touring to the summit of Trophy or Raft Mountain are both classic ascents. Having a guide in this terrain is very helpful, even if just for a few days to show you the area. |
Fight Meadow Chalet Terrain
| Fight Meadow Chalet is the home of the best touring that we have ever seen in BC. The Chalet sits in a vast sub alpine meadow system that is pure magic. This is the place to tour and explore; one can cruise in all directions and find fantastic terrain to suit all abilities. There are lots of more laid back slopes near to the chalet to learn and practice backcountry skiing. The bigger terrain is a couple of hours away, and offers some great vertical. For backcountry touring, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, this is the best backcountry lodge in BC. |
Discovery Cabin Terrain
| Discovery Cabin is in a spectacular and remote valley just below tree line (6400 ft / 1970 m) that holds onto the powder late into the year. Out the back door you’ll find the steeps and out the front, sub-alpine meadows. The terrain here is simpler than Trophy. The basin is surrounded by mountains that have all aspects on them – north, south, east and west. The runs are longer, in the intermediate range, and have unbroken fall lines. Like Trophy, the cabin is situated in intermediate terrain but there is a lot of expert terrain which is easily accessible. There is a lot of good north facing slopes that are close to the cabin. This area does not get much wind and the quality of the powder is incredible. |
