ITINERARY
-
Day 1
Your adventure begins at 9:00 A.M. PST at the Wells Gray Adventures Office. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guide, complete a waiver, and receive a detailed briefing about your upcoming canoe trip.
From there, it’s a one-hour drive to the canoe dock at Clearwater Lake. At the lake, we’ll unload and organize our gear before boarding a water taxi for a scenic ride up Clearwater Lake, up the connecting river and into Azure Lake.
As you travel, the landscape transforms from gentle shorelines to dramatic vistas of towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks. After approximately 2 hours on the water, we’ll arrive at Rainbow Falls Campsite—our stunning base for the next two nights. Each campsite is equipped with outhouses, picnic tables, fire pits, and designated tent sites.
-
Day 2
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll set off to explore the enchanting surroundings of Rainbow Falls Campsite. Hike through a magical, moss-draped forest leading to the breathtaking Rainbow Falls. After soaking in the views, you’ll return to camp for a relaxing lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll hold a canoeing practice session, and then the rest of the day is yours to enjoy—go fishing, swimming, build sandcastles, or set off on a lakeside adventure!
-
Day 3
By now, we’ve made a good dent in our food supplies, so it’s time to pack up our lighter load and begin the journey down Azure Lake to our next campsite at Indian Point. Today’s paddle will take around 3.5 to 4 hours. With plenty of snacks on board—it promises to be a wonderful day on the lake. We’ll stick close to the shoreline, where we can admire towering trees, colourful rock formations, birds overhead, and, if we’re lucky, a glimpse of wildlife along the way.
-
Day 4
This morning, we’ll paddle down the river connecting the lakes and enter into the wide expanse of Clearwater Lake. This stretch of the journey features moving water, but by now everyone will be confident and comfortable in their canoes. Once we reach the north end of the lake, we’ll make our way to tonight’s campsite—perfectly positioned with stunning views straight into the mountains that cradle Azure Lake. Today’s paddle will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, offering a beautiful and rewarding route.
-
Day 5
After a warm cup of tea or coffee on the beach and a light breakfast, we’ll pack up the boats and paddle across the lake to the east side. Our destination is one of the most beloved campsites on Clearwater Lake—Barview. With its stunning white-sand beach, it’s often compared to something you’d find in the Caribbean! We aim to arrive early enough to soak up the sun and have a nice lunch. Today’s paddle will be similar in length to the day before, about 2.5 to 3 hours. Barview is also one of the best places on the lake for star-gazing, and after a cozy spaghetti dinner, you’ll be ready to stretch out on the beach and take in the dazzling night sky.
-
Day 6
On the final day, you’ll enjoy a relaxed 2.5-hour paddle back to the put-in point, arriving in the early afternoon. After loading up the vehicles, we’ll make our way home with a stop to visit the stunning Helmcken and Dawson Falls—two of Wells Gray Park’s most iconic sights.
This trip is the best way to reach the remote heart of Wells Gray Provincial Park, accessible only by water via Clearwater and Azure Lakes—two of British Columbia’s most spectacular canoeing routes. Wildlife sightings are possible, with chances to spot moose, deer, and otters along the shore. No prior canoeing experience is necessary—our guides are also instructors, and everyone will have the chance to learn and refine classic Canadian paddling techniques. Over the course of the journey, you’ll cover 60 to 100 km through breathtaking and varied wilderness, making this a true backcountry adventure.
